OCPB Confirms Consumer Protection for Online Purchases Without Physical Stores

Minister Supamas Isarabhakdi announced that the Office of the Consumer Protection Board (OCPB) can intervene in disputes involving online sellers, even those lacking physical storefronts.

On September 18, 2026, Supamas Isarabhakdi, Minister attached to the Prime Minister's Office, highlighted the OCPB's role in resolving consumer grievances regarding online shopping. The announcement followed a successful mediation case involving a consumer who ordered an electric sofa with massage functions and cup holders on August 15, only to receive an incorrect item.

Following the complaint, OCPB Secretary-General Ronnarong Poolpipat directed officials to investigate the business. The mediation resulted in the vendor agreeing to deliver the correct sofa by September 20, 2026, and providing financial compensation to the buyer. Minister Supamas emphasized that consumers who receive products that do not match their online descriptions are entitled to file complaints with the OCPB, regardless of whether the seller operates a physical shop or only sells online.

For residents and travelers in Thailand, this serves as a reminder that consumer protection laws extend to digital marketplaces. While the OCPB can facilitate mediation, it remains to be seen how the board will handle cases involving anonymous or overseas-based sellers who may be harder to track. Consumers are advised to keep records of their transactions and communications with sellers to assist in potential dispute resolution processes.
