Understanding Buy vs. Sell Rates
You have foreign currency (EUR, USD...) and want Bahts (THB)
The money changer BUYS your foreign currency. The calculation uses the provider's "BUY" rate.

The money changer SELLS foreign currency to you. The calculation uses the provider's "SELL" rate.
Tips to get more baht
- Change only a small amount at the airport: counters in town usually pay noticeably more.
- Bring clean, recent notes. Large notes (100 EUR or USD) often get a better rate than small ones.
- Compare the amount you receive, not the advertised rate: this page ranks offers for you.
- Thai ATMs charge a fixed fee per foreign-card withdrawal: withdraw less often, in larger amounts.
- When paying by card, decline conversion into your home currency and always pay in baht.
- Take your passport: exchange counters ask for it.
Frequently Asked Questions on Thailand Exchange
Why does the counter rate differ from Google or XE?
Google and XE display global wholesale interbank mid-market rates. Physical currency booths apply a cash spread to cover physical cash handling and local logistics costs.
Why do large bills receive higher rates?
Larger notes (50€, 100€, $100) are much more cost-effective to process and export for banks than small denominations ($1, $5), resulting in better counter rates.
Should I exchange money at the airport on arrival?
At Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport, main arrival hall booths offer poor rates. Go down to Basement Level B (Airport Rail Link) where SuperRich and Value Plus branches offer the same top city rates.
