Songthaews (Shared Pickups)
Modified pickup trucks with two bench rows. In Chiang Mai (red trucks) and Pattaya (dark blue), urban routes cost a flat 30–50 THB. Flag one down with a gentle wave, state your destination, press the buzzer to disembark, and pay the driver directly upon arrival.
TK
Tuk-Tuks & Negotiation
Tuk-tuks have no meters: always negotiate and agree upon the total fare before boarding. Firmly decline ultra-cheap 20–50 THB sightseeing offers that require stops at sponsored gem or custom tailor shops.
CP
Express Canal & River Ferries
In Bangkok, the Orange-flag Chao Phraya Express Boat (16 THB) provides congestion-free transit between royal landmarks. On inner canals, Khlong Saen Saep boats (12–22 THB) deliver fast east-west cross-city transit.
MT
Motorcycle Taxis (Win)
Recognizable by numbered orange or green vests at street corners. Ideal for navigating gridlocked traffic over short distances. Fares are listed on neighborhood station boards or bookable via Grab and Bolt.

1949 International Driving Permit Required
To legally ride a scooter or motorcycle, Thai law requires an International Driving Permit (1949 Convention) with the Category A (Motorcycle) endorsement stamped. A car licence (Category B) is not legally valid for two-wheelers in Thailand.

Basic shop insurance (Por Ror Bor) only covers minimal medical caps. International travel and repatriation insurance policies will reject medical claims if you drive without a valid motorcycle licence.

Never surrender your original passport as a security deposit (provide a cash deposit of 1,000–3,000 THB instead). Always record a 360-degree high-definition video of existing scratches before driving away.
