Trang Community Innovates with Century-Old Durian Sticky Rice
Farmers in Na Yong District, Trang, have launched a unique '100-year-old durian sticky rice' (Khao Lam) to boost local income.
A community group in Ban Hu Ton, Na Yong District, Trang Province, has successfully developed a unique local product: '100-year-old durian sticky rice' (Khao Lam). According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, this initiative aims to create additional income for local farmers by adding value to indigenous produce.
The product features durian sourced from the Thong Phinyo orchard, which is known for its award-winning local durian varieties. The orchard holds GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) certification, and the group specifically selects fruit from trees aged over 100 years to ensure a distinct flavor profile. The recipe combines traditional Na Yong-style sticky rice with coconut milk, salt, and chunks of the century-old durian, resulting in a dessert noted for its rich aroma and creamy texture.
This is the second consecutive year the group has produced this specialty due to positive consumer interest. For travelers and residents, this product represents a creative intersection of local agriculture and culinary tradition, offering a unique taste of Trang’s heritage. While the product has gained local popularity, potential buyers should note that production is community-based and seasonal. Further details regarding specific availability or retail locations outside of the immediate Ban Hu Ton area remain to be confirmed.
