CAAT Mandates Passenger Support Following Flight Cancellations Due to Anak Krakatau Eruption
The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has confirmed that airlines must provide assistance to passengers affected by flight cancellations between Bangkok and Jakarta caused by the eruption of Anak Krakatau.
On September 6–7, 2026, multiple flights between Bangkok and Jakarta were cancelled or disrupted due to volcanic ash from the eruption of Anak Krakatau, which impacted operations at several Indonesian airports, including Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK).
According to Khaosod Online, the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has issued a reminder regarding passenger rights. While the volcanic eruption is classified as a natural disaster beyond the airlines' direct control, CAAT emphasizes that carriers remain obligated to support passengers departing from Thailand under the Civil Aviation Board’s Regulation No. 101.
For passengers who had already checked in for flights cancelled on September 6, airlines are required to provide food, beverages, communication access, and, if an overnight stay is necessary, accommodation and transportation. Passengers must also be offered the choice between rebooking their flights or receiving a refund in the form of cash or vouchers. Those who had not yet checked in or were scheduled to travel after September 6 are also entitled to options regarding their travel arrangements.
Travelers currently in or planning to travel to the region should monitor airline notifications closely. While the current requirements for passenger care are clear, the duration of the flight disruptions remains subject to the ongoing volcanic activity and atmospheric conditions in Indonesia.
