Doctor Apologizes Following Complaints Over Patient Treatment

A doctor in Bangkok has issued a formal apology after being accused of verbally abusing patients and disparaging the national '30-baht' universal healthcare scheme.

A physician operating a clinic in the Khlong Sam Wa district of Bangkok has publicly apologized following allegations of unprofessional conduct. According to reports from Khaosod Online, the doctor faced complaints for allegedly insulting patients and making threatening phone calls. Specifically, the doctor was accused of disparaging users of Thailand’s '30-baht' universal healthcare scheme (the 'Gold Card' system) by referring to them as 'low-class patients.'

In a video released by Dr. Thanakrit Jitarirath, chairman of a subcommittee under the National Health Security Office (NHSO), the doctor expressed remorse, attributing the behavior to work-related stress. The physician emphasized that they support the 30-baht healthcare system, noting that their own family members utilize it, and reaffirmed their commitment to patient care. The doctor stated that the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding and high-stress interactions, pledging to accept feedback and improve their professional conduct.

For residents and expatriates, this incident highlights the ongoing oversight of medical conduct in Thailand. While the doctor has committed to behavioral improvements, the formal outcome of the NHSO’s investigation into the specific complaints remains to be confirmed. Patients are encouraged to utilize official channels if they encounter issues with medical service standards. The situation serves as a reminder of the importance of professional communication within the Thai public health framework.
