OCPB Clarifies Consumer Rights for Online Purchases in Thailand

Minister Supamas Isarabhakdi has confirmed that consumers can file complaints with the OCPB for misleading online purchases, even if the seller lacks a physical storefront.

According to a report by Matichon Online on September 18, 2026, Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Supamas Isarabhakdi has clarified the rights of consumers regarding online shopping in Thailand. The Minister emphasized that individuals who receive products that do not match their online descriptions—commonly referred to as 'not as advertised'—are entitled to seek assistance from the Office of the Consumer Protection Board (OCPB).

Crucially, this protection applies even when the seller operates exclusively online and does not maintain a physical storefront. The OCPB is tasked with mediating these disputes to ensure that buyers receive either a refund or a replacement product that meets the original specifications.

For residents and travelers in Thailand, this announcement serves as a reminder that digital commerce is subject to consumer protection regulations. If a purchase fails to meet the advertised standards, the OCPB provides a formal channel for resolution. However, it remains to be confirmed how the OCPB will enforce these measures against anonymous or overseas-based sellers who may fall outside local jurisdiction. Consumers are advised to keep records of their transactions, including screenshots of product descriptions and payment receipts, to facilitate any potential claims.
