Spanish Study Suggests Tomato Paste May Boost Cognitive Function

A recent study indicates that consuming two tablespoons of concentrated tomato paste daily for three months may improve memory and attention in healthy middle-aged adults.

According to a report by Khaosod Online, researchers in Spain have conducted a study exploring the cognitive effects of lycopene, a natural antioxidant found in tomatoes. The study involved 42 healthy middle-aged participants, divided into two groups: one that supplemented their diet with 35 grams (approximately two tablespoons) of concentrated tomato paste daily, and another that restricted intake of lycopene-rich foods such as tomatoes, watermelon, papaya, grapefruit, and guava.

After three months, the group consuming the tomato paste showed increased levels of lycopene in their systems. Researchers observed a trend toward improved cognitive performance, specifically in areas related to attention and associative memory, such as the ability to recall connections between names and faces. The study highlights the potential role of lycopene in supporting brain health.

For residents and travelers in Thailand, where tomatoes are a common ingredient in local cuisine, these findings offer an interesting perspective on dietary habits. However, it is important to note that this study was limited to a small group of 42 participants. While the results suggest a positive correlation between lycopene intake and cognitive function, further large-scale research is required to confirm these benefits and determine if they apply to broader populations.
