Chanthaburi Cardamom: From Local Crop to Wellness Innovation

According to a report by Khaosod Online, researchers from Rajamangala University of Technology Tawan-ok are addressing the decline of the 'Chanthaburi cardamom,' a unique local crop grown in the Khao Soi Dao ecosystem. Assistant Professor Siripa Wittayapornpipat and her team identified that the industry is struggling with falling market prices—which have dropped from 700–800 baht per kilogram to 400–500 baht—alongside climate change and a lack of interest from younger generations in continuing the labor-intensive cultivation process.

Currently, approximately 1,920 rai of land in the Khao Soi Dao Wildlife Sanctuary are dedicated to this crop. Because cultivation requires significant physical effort on mountainous terrain, the reduced profitability has led to a decrease in the number of active farmers. To combat this, the research team is focusing on 'mid-stream' development, aiming to transform the cardamom from a simple raw commodity into high-value wellness products that cater to the growing global health market.

For residents and visitors, this initiative highlights a shift in local agricultural identity. While the project aims to stabilize the livelihoods of local farmers, it remains to be seen how effectively these new wellness products will be integrated into the broader market and whether these efforts will successfully encourage younger generations to maintain the cultivation of this regional specialty.
