Egg Prices Surge Amidst Middleman Hoarding and Production Challenges

According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, egg prices have climbed to 4 baht per egg at the farm gate, a level not seen since the 2011 floods. Phayao Arikul, President of the Central Small-Scale Egg Layer Farmers Trade Association, stated that while there is no genuine shortage, production has dropped by 30% due to poultry disease outbreaks and volatile weather conditions during the transition from rainy to cool seasons.
Phayao attributed the perceived market scarcity to panic-buying by middlemen, who have increased their orders by 20% to stockpile inventory. This behavior has created localized supply issues for some retailers. For residents and travelers, this means higher costs at markets and potential availability issues at smaller shops. While the Ministry of Commerce has introduced a subsidized 'Thai Help Thai' egg program, industry representatives argue this may negatively impact small-scale vendors who cannot compete with the lower prices offered in modern trade outlets.
It remains to be confirmed whether the anticipated stabilization of production, as disease outbreaks are brought under control, will successfully lower prices. Industry experts suggest that prices may decrease in the coming two months as demand shifts during the upcoming Vegetarian Festival. Consumers are advised to monitor local market prices as the situation evolves.
