Medical Experts Warn Against Fat-Free Diets for Gallbladder Health
A gastroenterologist warns that strictly avoiding all fats to lose weight can lead to gallbladder dysfunction, potentially causing sludge or gallstones.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, medical experts are cautioning individuals against adopting extremely low-fat diets for weight loss. Dr. Zhuo Weiruo, a specialist in gastroenterology and liver health, explains that the gallbladder requires regular stimulation from dietary fats to contract and release bile effectively.
When individuals consume only boiled foods—such as boiled chicken breast, vegetables, and egg whites—without any oil or sauces for an extended period, the gallbladder may remain inactive. This lack of contraction can cause bile to stagnate, increasing the risk of developing gallbladder sludge or gallstones. Furthermore, rapid weight loss can alter the composition of bile, further elevating these health risks.
For residents and travelers in Thailand who may be adjusting their diets, the expert clarifies that this does not mean one should consume fried or unhealthy foods. Instead, the body requires a balanced intake to maintain proper organ function. While this information highlights a potential health risk associated with restrictive dieting, it remains a general medical observation. Individuals concerned about their digestive health or those planning significant dietary changes should consult with a qualified healthcare professional to ensure their approach is safe and sustainable.
