Clarification Issued Regarding Viral Video of Monk Receiving Massage

A video circulating on social media, which depicts a woman massaging the legs of a monk resting on a sofa, has prompted an official response from representatives of a temple in Kanchanaburi’s Phanom Thuan district. The footage, which sparked public criticism regarding perceived inappropriate behavior, was clarified by an aide to the abbot involved.

According to the statement provided to Khaosod Online, the video was recorded several months ago at the home of a long-time lay supporter. The aide explained that the monk, who suffers from chronic health conditions including diabetes, hypertension, and gout, was feeling unwell and had fallen asleep. The massage was performed after the monk’s disciples were consulted. Furthermore, the representative noted that the monk and the woman were not alone; the person who filmed the clip was also present, though the edited version shared online created a misleading impression of isolation.

Local authorities, including the Phanom Thuan district ecclesiastical chief, have stated that the incident does not constitute a 'Parajika' offense (a serious violation resulting in expulsion from the monkhood). For residents and visitors, this incident highlights the importance of context when viewing social media content. While the ecclesiastical authorities have cleared the monk of the most serious charges, the full circumstances surrounding the motivation of the individual who leaked the video remain a subject of local discussion.
