Airport Rail Link Operations Clarified Amid High-Speed Rail Negotiations
Deputy Prime Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn has clarified that the Airport Rail Link contract extension will last four months, not one year, as discussions regarding the high-speed rail project continue.
On September 14, 2026, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn addressed the status of the Airport Rail Link (ARL) operations. Speaking at Government House, Phiphat clarified that the extension for operating the ARL is set for a four-month period, refuting reports suggesting a one-year term.
This decision follows a September 11 meeting involving Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who serves as the chairman of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) Policy Committee, alongside State Railway of Thailand (SRT) officials. The discussions were prompted by Asia Era One Co., Ltd.’s request to terminate its contract for the high-speed rail project connecting three major airports.
Regarding the ARL, Phiphat emphasized that the private operator must bear the financial risks associated with fare revenue. If the revenue generated does not meet expectations, the operator is responsible for the shortfall. For residents and travelers, this means the ARL will continue to function under these specific terms until the current arrangement concludes on September 30.
While the immediate operation of the ARL is addressed, the broader future of the high-speed rail project remains under deliberation. Prime Minister Anutin is tasked with coordinating with the EEC board to reach a definitive conclusion on the high-speed rail contract. Stakeholders are currently awaiting further updates on how the government will resolve the termination request from the private sector.
