Bank of Thailand to Strengthen Measures Against 'Grey Capital'
The Bank of Thailand is set to announce new, stricter measures on September 10 to prevent the financial sector from being used for illegal activities.
According to a report by Prachachat Business, the Bank of Thailand (BOT) is preparing to announce a unified stance alongside commercial banks and non-bank financial institutions on September 10. The initiative aims to ensure that Thailand’s financial sector is not utilized as a tool, conduit, or support system for illegal transactions, often referred to as 'grey capital.'
BOT Governor stated that the central bank is elevating its oversight to curb illicit financial flows. The move follows the success of previous interventions; specifically, a regulation prohibiting cash withdrawals exceeding 5 million baht resulted in a 52% reduction in such transactions. Additionally, new controls on gold purchases have also impacted transaction volumes.
For residents and travelers, this development signals a tightening of financial regulations and monitoring within the country. While these measures are designed to combat organized crime and money laundering, they may lead to increased scrutiny or documentation requirements for large financial transactions. It remains to be confirmed what specific new protocols will be unveiled on September 10 and how they might affect individual banking experiences or the ease of conducting large-scale financial operations in Thailand. Stakeholders are advised to monitor official announcements from their respective financial institutions following the BOT’s upcoming declaration.
