Thai Specialty Coffee Gains Global Premium Status
The Thai Specialty Coffee Association reports a robust 60–65 billion baht market, driven by international demand for premium Thai coffee varieties.
According to a report by Prachachat Business, the Thai coffee market is currently valued between 60 and 65 billion baht, demonstrating significant growth despite broader economic trends. The Specialty Coffee Association of Thailand attributes this success to the rising global popularity of specific Thai coffee varieties, notably Java and Serina, which are now recognized as premium products.
International buyers and Chinese roasters are reportedly willing to pay prices well above the standard market rate to secure these beans. Domestically, consumer behavior in Thailand is shifting; while the total volume of cups consumed is decreasing, there is a clear trend toward higher-quality coffee, which is further fueling the specialty segment.
For residents and travelers, this shift suggests that Thailand is becoming a destination for high-end coffee experiences, with local cafes increasingly focusing on quality over quantity. While the data highlights a strong market performance, it remains to be confirmed how this premium pricing will impact the long-term sustainability of small-scale local farmers and whether this trend will lead to a broader expansion of specialty coffee shops across the country.
