Thailand’s SEC Announces New Crypto Transfer Regulations Starting February 2027
Thailand's Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has introduced stricter 'Travel Rule' guidelines for digital asset transfers to combat money laundering and cybercrime.
According to a report by Prachachat Business, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Thailand has finalized new regulations concerning digital asset transfers. These measures, designed to enhance the monitoring of crypto transactions, are set to take effect on February 27, 2027.
Under the new 'Travel Rule' guidelines, digital asset business operators are now required to maintain comprehensive records of both the sender and the recipient for every transaction processed. A significant change involves transfers exceeding 30,000 baht; for these transactions, users will be mandated to provide additional information regarding the counterparty involved in the transfer. The SEC stated that these protocols are intended to strengthen defenses against money laundering and various forms of technology-related crime.
For residents and expatriates in Thailand who utilize digital assets, these changes may impact the documentation required when moving funds through local exchanges. While the policy aims to increase financial security, users should prepare for more rigorous verification processes when conducting larger transfers. As of now, the specific technical interfaces for submitting this additional counterparty data have not been fully detailed by all individual service providers. Residents are advised to monitor updates from their specific digital asset platforms to ensure compliance with these upcoming requirements before the February 2027 deadline.
