International driving permit required
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is required to legally ride or drive in Thailand, in addition to your home licence — for a scooter or motorcycle, the IDP must specifically cover the motorcycle category. The IDP cannot be obtained locally: it must be requested before departure, in your home country. Without a valid IDP, insurance is void in the event of an accident, leaving all costs (repairs, hospital) to the rider or driver.
