Major Thai Retailers Pivot Strategies Amid Economic Challenges

The Mall Group and CP Axtra are restructuring their retail operations to combat economic headwinds and the rise of e-commerce.

According to a report by Prachachat Business, two of Thailand’s retail giants, The Mall Group and CP Axtra, are implementing new strategic shifts to navigate current economic difficulties and intense competition from online platforms.

The Mall Group is focusing on integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) to better predict consumer demand. A key component of their new approach is the 'Grocerant' model—a hybrid concept combining grocery shopping with restaurant-style dining experiences—designed to draw customers into physical stores by offering services that online platforms cannot easily replicate. The company is also expanding its business scope into six core pillars to diversify its offerings.

Simultaneously, CP Axtra is concentrating on upgrading its supply chain infrastructure to maintain efficiency. These moves reflect a broader trend among traditional retailers in Thailand as they attempt to modernize their business models to remain relevant in a digital-first market.

For residents and travelers, these changes may lead to more experiential shopping environments and potentially more personalized services in major retail outlets. However, the long-term success of these strategies remains to be seen. It is not yet clear how these shifts will impact pricing or the availability of specific goods, nor have the companies provided a detailed timeline for the full rollout of these new operational models across all their locations.
