Thai Cabinet Approves Four New Labor Law Reforms
The Thai government has approved four labor law amendments to enhance protections for seafarers, home-based workers, and state enterprise employees.
On August 18, 2026, the Thai Cabinet approved four labor law measures proposed by the Ministry of Labor, aimed at closing legal gaps and expanding protections for diverse worker groups. Labor Minister Julapun Amornvivat stated that these reforms are designed to modernize welfare standards for the contemporary workforce.
Key updates include the amendment of the Maritime Labor Act, which now mandates that employers enroll seafarers in the Social Security and Workmen's Compensation funds. This ensures that maritime workers receive the same seven categories of social security benefits and accident protections as land-based employees. Additionally, the new regulations prohibit ship owners from employing individuals under 18 years of age between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM to safeguard the well-being of young workers.

The reforms also extend equal marriage rights to state enterprise employees, with retroactive application to the date the Marriage Equality Act was enacted.
