Ministry of Higher Education Investigates Allegations of Improper Chinese Student Recruitment
Thailand's Minister of Higher Education has ordered an urgent probe into allegations that a university facilitated unauthorized programs for Chinese students linked to illicit capital.
On August 5, 2026, Professor Dr. Yodchanan Wongsawat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), announced an immediate investigation into a university following public allegations of misconduct. The probe was triggered by claims from Professor Dr. Kowin Wiwatpongphan, a member of the Rajamangala University of Technology Krungthep Council, who alleged that acting university administrators bypassed council oversight to benefit illicit Chinese capital groups.
According to the allegations, the university reportedly deceived Chinese students by enrolling them in unauthorized degree and non-degree programs, potentially involving irregular visa processing. Minister Yodchanan has directed the Office of the Permanent Secretary for MHESI to conduct a comprehensive fact-finding mission. The university is required to provide full transparency regarding its curricula and cooperate with investigators.
