Department of Corrections Addresses Release of Individuals Linked to Chonburi Murders

Following public concern regarding the safety of residents and the impact on tourism in Chonburi, the Thai Department of Corrections (DOC) has clarified the release of two former inmates, identified as Mr. Thana (Pong) and another individual, who were recently linked to a high-profile case involving five homicides.

According to a statement reported by Khaosod Online on August 1, 2026, the DOC expressed condolences to the victims' families. The department emphasized that both individuals served their full sentences as mandated by court rulings. Specifically, Mr. Thana was released on June 5, 2026, after completing a seven-year, seven-month, and 25-day sentence for attempted murder, firearms offenses, and drug-related charges. The DOC stated that he did not receive any special privileges, such as early parole or sentence reductions, and that his release occurred only after his term was fully served.

Furthermore, the DOC maintained that it conducted mandatory risk assessments through the prison committee, which includes probation officers, prior to his release in accordance with the Act on Measures for the Prevention of Repeated Offenses (JSOC). While the department asserts that all legal protocols were strictly followed, the incident has sparked significant public debate regarding the effectiveness of post-release monitoring systems. It remains to be confirmed how these assessments are conducted and whether future legislative adjustments will be made to address public safety concerns.
