Thailand Plans New 'Made in Thailand' Requirements for EV Manufacturers

Khaosod Online Thailand One source

The Ministry of Finance is developing new local content requirements for electric vehicle manufacturers to boost domestic production, with implementation expected within three years.

According to Khaosod Online, the Thai Ministry of Finance is preparing to introduce new 'Made in Thailand' (MIT) criteria for the electric vehicle (EV) industry. Permanent Secretary Lavaron Sangsnit announced that the Excise Department will collaborate with the Federation of Thai Industries to establish specific local content requirements. The initiative aims to transition Thailand from an EV importer to a regional manufacturing and export hub. The government expects to finalize these regulations soon, with a planned implementation timeline of three years, targeting full enforcement by 2030. This lead time is intended to allow manufacturers sufficient time to adjust their supply chains and production processes. Currently, the Excise Department is evaluating the appropriate percentage of local components required and determining potential tax adjustments for companies that fail to meet these new standards. For residents and those involved in the automotive sector, this policy shift signals a long-term commitment to localizing EV production. Key details remain to be confirmed, specifically the exact minimum local content percentage and the specific tax penalties for non-compliance. These factors will be critical in determining how the policy impacts vehicle pricing and market availability in the coming years.
