Bank of Thailand Highlights Massive Informal Economy

Prachachat Business One source

The Bank of Thailand reports that the informal economy accounts for 48% of the nation's GDP, with plans to integrate 35% of non-illicit businesses into the formal sector.

The Bank of Thailand (BOT) has released data indicating that the country's informal economy is substantial, representing approximately 48% of the national GDP. According to Prachachat Business, this sector includes roughly 2.5 million businesses that currently operate outside of formal corporate or tax registration. Furthermore, the central bank noted that 44% of Thai households are currently burdened by informal debt. To address this, the BOT is prioritizing a financial strategy built on three pillars: Trust, Transparency, and Inclusion. The institution aims to transition 35% of these informal entities—specifically those not involved in illicit or 'grey' activities—into the formal economic system. For residents and expatriates, this initiative may signal future shifts in how small businesses operate, potentially leading to increased formalization of services and changes in local lending practices. While the central bank has outlined its strategic intent to integrate these businesses, the specific mechanisms, timelines, and incentives for this transition remain to be confirmed. Observers will be watching to see how the government balances the need for tax compliance with the practical realities of the vast informal workforce.
