Thailand-EU Free Trade Agreement Negotiations Enter Final Phase

According to Khaosod Online, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Supajee Suthumpun announced that negotiations for the Thailand-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) have reached a critical stage. Following a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, officials confirmed that approximately two-thirds of the agreement's chapters have been finalized.

The government has emphasized that the primary objective of these negotiations is to secure the maximum possible economic benefit for Thailand, while maintaining a clear set of minimum requirements to protect national interests. The next round of discussions, the 10th in the series, is scheduled to take place in Phuket on September 28, 2026.

For residents and travelers, this development is significant as a finalized FTA could eventually lead to reduced tariffs, increased availability of European goods, and shifts in the local business landscape. Officials estimate that once a deal is reached, the subsequent legal review and formal signing process will take approximately one year to complete.

While the progress is notable, the final third of the agreement remains under negotiation. The public and stakeholders are currently awaiting the outcomes of the upcoming Phuket summit to see if the remaining chapters can be successfully reconciled to meet the government's stated goals.
