Rising Cost of Living Impacts Food Choices in Thailand
A Department of Health survey reveals that high living costs are forcing many in Thailand to alter their food purchasing habits.
According to a report from Khaosod Online, the Thai Department of Health recently released findings from its 'How to Live in Difficult Times' poll, conducted between July 1 and July 31, 2026. Dr. Amporn Benjaponpitak, Director-General of the Department of Health, stated that rising economic pressures—specifically increased fuel prices, transportation costs, and general inflation—are significantly impacting how citizens select and consume food.
The survey, which included 941 respondents, identified that 46.23% of participants feel the most significant impact on their food access comes from rising fuel and transport costs, followed by 30.29% citing general inflation. To cope with these financial constraints, 63.76% of respondents suggested planning menus and shopping lists to maintain nutritional quality on a limited budget.
For residents and travelers, this trend highlights a potential shift in local market dynamics and food availability. While the survey provides insight into consumer behavior, it remains to be confirmed how these adjustments will affect long-term nutritional health across different demographics.
