Temple Vandalism Incident in Songkhla Sparks Controversy
A mother has denied allegations that her incarcerated son vandalized a Buddha statue at Wat Sa Ket in Songkhla, as the temple abbot chooses to offer forgiveness rather than pursue legal action.
On August 19, 2026, reports emerged regarding an act of vandalism at Wat Sa Ket in Mueang District, Songkhla. According to Khaosod Online, an unidentified individual reportedly placed underwear on the head of a reclining Buddha statue and urinated on the image within the temple’s ordination hall. The perpetrator also damaged religious items, including altar tables and floral offerings.
Initial rumors suggested the act was committed by a man recently released from prison seeking revenge against monks who had previously reported him to the police. However, the mother of the suspected individual visited the temple to refute these claims. She asserted that her son remains incarcerated and under court-ordered detention, noting that she had visited him in prison recently, making his involvement impossible. She expressed concern over the damage to her family's reputation caused by the spread of false information and stated her intent to pursue legal action against those circulating such claims.
Phra Atthachai, a monk at the temple, confirmed that the abbot has opted to treat the incident as an act of forgiveness rather than filing a police report. As the temple lacks CCTV, the identity of the perpetrator remains unconfirmed. The area has been temporarily closed for cleaning due to lingering odors. For residents and visitors, this incident highlights the importance of verifying information during sensitive local disputes. The lack of security footage means the true culprit remains at large.
