Egg Prices Rise in Thailand Amid Market Speculation
Retail egg prices have climbed to 6.20 baht per egg as middlemen increase orders by 20%, despite producers confirming there is no actual shortage.
According to a report by Prachachat Business on August 11, 2026, retail egg prices in Thailand have surged to 6.20 baht per egg. Small-scale egg producers in the central region report that while production has declined by approximately 30% due to disease outbreaks and volatile weather conditions, there is no genuine shortage of supply in the market.
Industry representatives attribute the price hike to panic buying and speculative behavior by middlemen, who have increased their orders by roughly 20% above normal levels. This surge in demand has led to localized stock shortages in some areas, creating the appearance of a supply crisis. Producers currently estimate the farm-gate price for mixed-grade eggs at 4 baht per egg and suggest that further price increases may not be necessary.
For residents and travelers, this situation highlights potential fluctuations in food costs at local markets and grocery stores. While the current price spike is driven by market sentiment rather than a total lack of inventory, it remains to be seen whether retail prices will stabilize or if the increased demand from middlemen will continue to exert upward pressure on costs. Consumers are advised to monitor local market conditions as the situation develops.
