NIDA Poll Reveals Motivations and Challenges for Thai Public Sector Employees
A recent survey by NIDA Poll highlights job security as the primary driver for public sector employment in Thailand, while also identifying concerns regarding excessive workloads.
A survey conducted by the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA Poll) between August 4 and 6, 2026, has shed light on the motivations and sentiments of Thailand’s public sector workforce. The study, titled 'Stay or Leave,' gathered responses from 1,310 government officials, state enterprise employees, and civil servants across the country.
According to the findings reported by Khaosod Online, 78.85% of respondents cited job security as the primary reason for choosing a career in the public sector. Other significant factors included favorable benefits (54.12%), competitive salaries (23.28%), and family expectations (22.90%).
Despite these attractions, the poll also surfaced underlying issues within the bureaucracy. Many participants pointed to excessive workloads, leading to discussions regarding support for early retirement programs.
For residents and expatriates, these findings offer insight into the internal dynamics of the Thai administrative system. While the public sector remains a highly sought-after career path due to its stability, the reported strain on staff may have implications for service efficiency and future administrative reforms. It remains to be confirmed how government agencies will address these concerns regarding workload and whether any formal policy changes regarding early retirement will be implemented in response to these survey results.
