Maerim Elephant Sanctuary
Thailand Partner Network
Partner overview
Maerim Elephant Sanctuary, in the Mae Rim district north of Chiang Mai, was founded by Busabong “Pui” Kuetkong after she witnessed the suffering of elephants used for logging and tourism. It is run as an ethical sanctuary: no riding, no shows, no hooks and no chains. Visitors walk with the elephants through the forest, feed them fresh fruit and watch them bathe in the river or enjoy a mud spa.
The herd includes I-Sa-ra, the eldest at 45, rescued from a logging camp; Thong Luan, 43, rescued in September 2024; Buatong, rescued from a circus; and Doi Pho, the youngest at 6. The sanctuary reports daily health check-ups by certified vets, chemical-free food bought from nearby villages, monthly tree planting and recyclable glass water bottles. Programmes include half-day morning and afternoon visits (1,600 THB per adult, 800 THB for children under 7, free under 3), a 2,000 THB full-day visit, a half-day elephant plus Sticky Waterfall combination and a Greet & Feed visit. Hotel transfers from Chiang Mai (about 45 minutes) are included, babies and families are welcome, and Google shows an “Excellent” rating from 1,546 reviews.
