Thailand Prepares for Potential El Niño Impacts on Water Resources

According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives held a meeting on August 5, 2026, to address potential water management challenges. Officials noted that the El Niño phenomenon may intensify, with water reserves at the start of the upcoming dry season expected to be 19% lower than the previous year.

To mitigate these risks, the Royal Irrigation Department plans to prioritize rainwater usage supplemented by irrigation, while accelerating the dredging of water sources and the removal of weeds. Over 5,991 pieces of machinery have been deployed to high-risk areas nationwide. The Ministry is also establishing weekly reporting protocols to manage both flood and drought risks and is working to expedite financial assistance for affected farmers.

For residents and travelers, these measures indicate a proactive approach to potential water shortages and agricultural disruptions.
