Thai Rice Exports Decline in First Half of 2026
Thailand's rice exports dropped by 18.81% in the first six months of 2026, impacted by intense global price competition and the loss of the Iraqi market.
According to data released by the Department of Foreign Trade, Thailand exported 3.28 million tons of rice between January and June 2026, marking an 18.81% decrease compared to the same period last year. The export value reached approximately 1.91 billion USD (60.38 billion THB), a decline of 20.51%.
Arada Fuangtong, Director-General of the Department of Foreign Trade, attributed this downturn to high global rice supplies, which have intensified price competition. Thai 5% white rice is currently priced at 447 USD per ton, making it more expensive than competitors from Vietnam (435 USD), Pakistan (405 USD), and India (367 USD). Additionally, regional conflicts in the Middle East have halted exports to Iraq since March 2026.
For residents and travelers, this shift in the agricultural sector highlights potential volatility in local commodity pricing and trade dynamics. While the export figures are down, officials suggest that the El Niño-induced drought could eventually drive global demand as nations seek to bolster food security. Whether Thailand can successfully pivot to alternative markets to offset the loss of the Iraqi trade remains to be confirmed. The situation underscores the ongoing challenges for Thailand's agricultural economy in a competitive global landscape.
