Department of Provincial Administration Denies Civil Registration Data Breach
Thailand's Department of Provincial Administration has officially denied that recent personal data leaks originated from the national civil registration database.
On August 5, 2026, the Department of Provincial Administration (DOPA) issued a formal statement addressing reports of personal data leaks circulating on social media. The department explicitly stated that the leaked information did not originate from the central civil registration database managed by the Bureau of Registration Administration.
In response to the unauthorized circulation of facial images, DOPA is collaborating with the National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA) and the Office of the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) to conduct a thorough investigation. Furthermore, the department has filed a formal complaint with the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) to pursue legal action against those responsible.
For residents and travelers, this incident highlights the ongoing sensitivity surrounding digital identity in Thailand. DOPA emphasized that it continues to upgrade its database security and utilizes the 'ThaID' system for high-level identity verification. The department also issued a warning regarding the dissemination of false information online, noting that spreading distorted or illegal data may violate the Computer Crimes Act, which carries potential criminal penalties.
While the government has denied a breach of its primary systems, the investigation into the source of the leaked images remains ongoing.
