Seven Sinkholes Emerge in Khon Kaen, Disaster Declaration Pending
Authorities are preparing to declare Ban Wang Charoen a disaster zone following the appearance of seven sinkholes, with geologists attributing the phenomenon to tectonic shifts.
On August 5, 2026, officials and geologists from the Mineral Resources Office Region 2 inspected seven sinkholes in Ban Wang Charoen, located in the Phu Pha Man district of Khon Kaen province. According to Khaosod Online Thailand, each sinkhole measures approximately 4 to 5 meters in depth and exhibits a circular collapse pattern.
Ora-uma Summat, director of the Mineral Resources Office, explained that the sinkholes are caused by the movement of ancient rock layers deep underground, triggered by tectonic plate shifts. These movements create or expand existing fractures in the earth's crust, which are common in the Isan region due to its geological composition. While the current cavities are not expanding, the local government is moving toward declaring the area a disaster zone to facilitate management and short-term remediation through backfilling.
For residents and visitors, geologists noted a potential warning sign: the appearance of air bubbles or foam rising from the ground, which indicates the presence of underground voids that may lead to further collapses. While the immediate risk is being managed, the long-term stability of the area remains uncertain, as experts cannot predict when these geological shifts will cease. Authorities advise the public to remain vigilant and report any unusual ground activity to local officials immediately.
