Investigation Launched After Large Gaur Found Dead Near Kui Buri National Park
Authorities are investigating the death of a large male gaur discovered outside the boundaries of Kui Buri National Park in Prachuap Khiri Khan province.
On August 5, 2026, officials from Kui Buri National Park were alerted by local residents to the carcass of a large male gaur found in Village 8, Ban Phu Bon, Hat Kham sub-district, Kui Buri district, Prachuap Khiri Khan. According to Khaosod Online Thailand, the animal was located outside the protected area of the national park.
Initial inspections revealed multiple wounds on the carcass. Using a metal detector, officials identified objects resembling bullet fragments embedded within the remains. Nitat Noonsong, Director of the Protected Area Administration Office 3 (Phetchaburi branch), confirmed that the deceased gaur was estimated to be between 21 and 25 years old, weighing approximately 900 to 1,000 kilograms, with a body length of 240 centimeters and a height of 160 centimeters.
Authorities have coordinated with a veterinary team to perform a necropsy to determine the exact cause of death. Officials are currently gathering evidence to identify the perpetrator, as the findings suggest the animal may have been illegally shot. For residents and visitors in the area, this incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding wildlife protection in the buffer zones surrounding national parks. While the investigation is ongoing, the primary focus remains on confirming the cause of death and pursuing legal action against those responsible for the potential poaching of this protected species.
