Thai Army Rebuts UN Special Rapporteur’s Report on Border Conflict

On August 4, 2026, the Royal Thai Army (RTA) issued a formal response to the 'End of Mission Statement' released by Tom Andrews, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia. Following his July 20–31 visit to Cambodia, Andrews’ report included references to Thailand regarding the ongoing border situation.

RTA spokesperson Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvaree stated that Thailand is not the instigator of the conflict, asserting that Cambodia has consistently violated Thai sovereignty through military force. According to the RTA, Thailand’s defensive actions were necessary to protect citizens, which included the establishment of temporary shelters for displaced persons from both nations to ensure safety from combat zones. The RTA specifically challenged the figure of 650,000 displaced persons cited in the report, characterizing it as a distortion of facts. The army clarified that this number represents individuals moved to temporary shelters for safety, rather than a direct consequence of Thai aggression.
