Brazilian Woman Discovers Surgical Scissors Left in Abdomen After Hysterectomy

According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, a Brazilian woman experienced a severe medical ordeal after a hysterectomy performed earlier this year. For three months, the patient suffered from intense abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, and a sensation of a foreign object within her body.

In April, emergency medical intervention revealed that an 18-centimeter pair of surgical scissors had been left inside her abdomen during the initial procedure. The presence of the instrument caused significant complications, including necrosis of the small intestine. The patient, identified as Erika Cristina Bunai von Hunholtz, reported that she has since undergone four separate surgeries: the initial hysterectomy, the emergency procedure to remove the scissors, a surgery to treat a hernia and intestinal abscess, and a final operation to address an abscess on her liver.

While the patient is currently in recovery, she has expressed that she only recently realized the severity of her condition and how close she came to losing her life. For residents and travelers, this case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of medical due diligence and seeking second opinions when experiencing unexplained, persistent post-operative pain. It remains to be confirmed what legal actions or hospital investigations are currently underway regarding the medical staff involved in the initial surgery.
