Taiwanese Study Warns Contact Lens Wearers of Amoeba-Bacteria Synergy

A recent study conducted by National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University and Taipei Veterans General Hospital has highlighted a significant health risk for contact lens wearers. According to Khaosod Online, researchers discovered that certain strains of Acanthamoeba—a parasite known to cause keratitis—harbor bacteria within their cells. Experts suggest this symbiotic relationship may increase the parasite's resistance to environmental stressors and medical treatments, making infections more difficult to manage.
Dr. Chi Ta-te, head of the Department of Tropical Medicine at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, explained that while Acanthamoeba is commonly found in soil and water, it typically does not cause disease in healthy individuals. However, the risk increases significantly when contact lenses are worn while swimming, bathing, or when cleaned with tap water. These activities can allow the parasite to adhere to the lens and enter the cornea through microscopic abrasions.
The research team analyzed samples from 20 suspected keratitis patients, including corneal swabs, contact lenses, and storage cases, alongside four environmental strains. While the study clarifies the biological mechanism behind increased treatment difficulty, it remains to be confirmed how widespread these specific bacterial-carrying strains are outside of the study group. Residents and travelers in Thailand are advised to maintain strict lens hygiene and avoid exposing lenses to water sources.
