Thai Poultry Association Opposes Potential Chinese Chicken Imports

According to Khaosod Online, the Thai Department of Livestock Development has confirmed that China has submitted a request to export poultry products to Thailand. Officials emphasized that this is in the preliminary stages and no import permits have been granted, as the process requires rigorous safety evaluations and public consultation with local farmers.

Dr. Chaweewan Khampha, President of the Thai Poultry Association, has publicly opposed the proposal. She argues that allowing Chinese poultry imports could severely damage the domestic industry, which has worked for years to establish global standards for hygiene and production. The Association expressed concerns regarding potential disease transmission and the lack of clarity surrounding the food safety standards of the proposed imports. Dr. Chaweewan highlighted that Thailand currently produces sufficient poultry to meet domestic demand and warned that such a policy could undermine the sustainability of local farmers.
