Authorities Arrest Gang Behind Canadian Mushroom Picking Employment Scam
A fraudulent recruitment scheme promising jobs picking mushrooms in Canada has been dismantled, with 325 victims reporting losses totaling nearly 30 million baht.
According to a report by Matichon Online on October 23, 2026, Thai authorities have successfully apprehended members of a criminal gang involved in a large-scale employment scam. The group allegedly operated a fraudulent recruitment company that promised victims lucrative opportunities to work as mushroom pickers in Canada.
Investigations revealed that the gang successfully deceived 325 individuals, resulting in total financial losses estimated at nearly 30 million baht. Victims were lured by the prospect of overseas employment, only to be abandoned after paying significant fees to the perpetrators.
For residents and expatriates in Thailand, this case serves as a reminder to exercise extreme caution when dealing with recruitment agencies that promise high-paying jobs abroad, especially those requiring large upfront payments. Official employment channels typically involve verified government processes, and any offer that seems too good to be true should be thoroughly vetted.
While the primary suspects have been taken into custody, the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are currently working to determine if there are additional accomplices or further victims who have not yet come forward. It remains to be confirmed how the recovered funds will be handled and whether the victims will be eligible for restitution through the legal process.
