Student Rescued After Being Tricked by Call Center Scam

Bangkok police rescued a university student who was coerced by scammers into faking their own kidnapping to extort money from their parents.

On October 17, 2026, Metropolitan Police in Bangkok successfully rescued a university student who had been manipulated by a call center scam syndicate. According to Khaosod Online, the student’s parents contacted Pathum Wan Police after the student went missing and sent messages suggesting they were being harmed.

Investigations revealed that the student had been contacted on October 16 by individuals posing as mobile network service providers. The scammers claimed the student’s personal identification data had been used in money laundering activities. Under duress and fear, the student was coerced into isolating themselves in a dormitory in the Phaya Thai area and using a mixture of coffee and syrup to simulate blood, intending to deceive their parents into paying a ransom.

Police located the student at approximately 6:00 PM while they were still on an active call with the perpetrators. Upon realizing law enforcement had intervened, the scammers immediately terminated the connection.

This incident serves as a stark reminder for residents and visitors in Thailand regarding the sophistication of local call center scams, which often use threats of legal trouble to isolate victims. While the student was safely recovered, authorities have not yet disclosed if the perpetrators have been identified or if further arrests are pending. Residents are advised to remain cautious of unsolicited calls requesting personal information or demanding urgent financial action.
