Abbot Arrested for Methamphetamine Possession in Buriram

A 44-year-old abbot was arrested in Buriram province for purchasing and consuming methamphetamine, citing loneliness during the Buddhist Lent period.

On October 8, 2026, authorities in Buriram province, led by the Prakhon Chai District Chief and the Ban Bua Police Station Superintendent, apprehended a 44-year-old abbot identified as Phra Covid. The arrest took place following an investigation into drug activity involving the monk and a 34-year-old accomplice named Apisit.

According to reports from Khaosod Online, the accomplice confessed that the abbot had transferred 400 baht to him to facilitate the purchase of methamphetamine for shared consumption. The abbot, who has served in the monkhood for nearly eight years, admitted to the charges. He explained that he traveled by car to a different district to acquire the drugs, claiming that he could not purchase them near his own temple due to the high level of community trust and scrutiny he faced there. He further stated that he began using the substance due to feelings of loneliness during the Buddhist Lent season.

For residents and visitors, this incident highlights ongoing local law enforcement efforts to address drug-related issues within the community. While the individuals have been taken into custody, the investigation remains ongoing to determine the full extent of the drug procurement network. Further details regarding the legal proceedings and the status of the temple involved are expected to be confirmed by local authorities in the coming days.
