Chiang Mai Hotel Denies Accommodation to Buddhist Monk
A prominent Buddhist monk reported being refused a room at a Chiang Mai hotel, with staff citing the owner's religious beliefs as the reason.
On September 26, 2026, Phra Maha Napan, an assistant abbot at Wat Saket and a well-known human rights advocate, shared an account of being denied accommodation at a hotel in Chiang Mai. The monk had sought a room after his flight from Bangkok was delayed due to severe weather, causing him to miss his original connection.
According to the monk’s social media post, hotel staff initially informed him that he could not stay because the owner was a devout Muslim. Later, the hotel manager reportedly changed the explanation, claiming the owner was Sikh. Phra Maha Napan expressed his concern regarding the incident, emphasizing that regardless of religious affiliation, businesses should not discriminate against guests based on such grounds. He stated his intention to file a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand (NHRC).
