Royal Thai Navy to Decommission and Auction 11 Vessels
The Thai Ministry of Defense has ordered the decommissioning of 11 naval vessels, including ships over 50 years old, effective October 1, 2026.
According to a report from Khaosod Online, Defense Minister Lt. Gen. Adul Boonthamcharoen signed an order on September 23, 2026, to decommission 11 vessels from the Royal Thai Navy. The order, which takes effect on October 1, 2026, cites the advanced age and deteriorating condition of the ships, noting that maintenance costs have become economically unfeasible.
Among the vessels slated for retirement are the frigate HTMS Khirirat and the supply ship HTMS Similan, both of which have been in service for over 50 years. The Ministry of Defense plans to auction these vessels to recover funds for the national treasury. If the auction process fails to secure buyers, the military intends to dismantle the ships and sell them for parts.
