Thailand and China Advance 'GI 3+3' Intellectual Property Initiative
Thai officials have met with Chinese counterparts in Beijing to finalize a strategic intellectual property partnership, focusing on the mutual recognition of Geographical Indication products.
On September 22-23, 2026, the Thai Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) held bilateral discussions in Beijing with the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) and the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR). According to Khaosod Online, the meetings aimed to strengthen strategic cooperation on intellectual property rights and combat counterfeit goods.
A key outcome of the visit is the advancement of the 'GI 3+3' pilot project. This initiative facilitates the reciprocal registration of three Geographical Indication (GI) products from each nation. Thailand plans to introduce its premium 'Hom Mali Rice,' 'Phetchabun Tamarind,' and 'Tubtim Siam Pomelo' to the Chinese market by early 2027.
For residents and travelers, this development signifies a formal effort to ensure the authenticity of high-quality Thai agricultural products within China, potentially increasing their availability and protecting their brand integrity abroad. Additionally, Thai officials engaged with the Chinese private sector to discuss intellectual property management regarding future technologies.
