Uthai Thani Community Transforms 'Som Sa' into Health Tourism Attraction

Residents in Khun Chat village have formed a community enterprise to process the traditional 'Som Sa' citrus fruit into five value-added products, aiming to boost local health tourism.

In Uthai Thani province, residents of Khun Chat village in Nong Chang district have launched the 'Hom Sakae Krang' community enterprise to revitalize the local economy through the 'Som Sa' fruit. Once grown only in backyards, this ancient citrus variety—known for its thick, bumpy rind and aromatic, sweet-sour juice—is now the centerpiece of a new community-led initiative.

The group, consisting of 15 members, focuses on extracting essential oils from the fruit's peel, which is rich in limonene. By processing these fruits, the community has successfully developed five distinct products, including 100% pure Som Sa essential oil. This effort is part of a broader strategy to transform the village into a destination for health-focused tourism, offering visitors a unique look at local agricultural innovation and sustainable practices.

For travelers and residents, this initiative highlights the growing trend of community-based tourism in Thailand, where local heritage and natural resources are leveraged to create sustainable livelihoods. While the enterprise has successfully launched its initial product line, further details regarding the specific health tourism activities available to visitors and the long-term scalability of their production facilities remain to be confirmed. The project serves as a notable example of how rural communities are diversifying their income streams through traditional agricultural products.
