Concerns Raised Over TH-AI Passport Project Transparency
Opposition MP Karndee Leopairote has requested an official audit of the TH-AI Passport project, citing potential irregularities in procurement and budget allocation.
On September 23, 2026, Karndee Leopairote, a list MP and deputy leader of the Democrat Party, announced that she has formally requested the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) to investigate the TH-AI Passport project. Speaking at the Parliament, Karndee highlighted seven areas of concern regarding the project's financial management.
Central to the investigation is the definition of 'creative users,' a metric used to justify over one billion baht in state expenditure. Karndee noted that three weeks after the project's launch, the operational process remains unclear. She pointed to discrepancies in the amended contract, which includes fixed operational costs alongside fees for Generative AI services, calculated at 24.70 baht per user per month. Furthermore, she alleged that the Terms of Reference (TOR) process was rushed and failed to adhere to integrity agreements.
For residents and travelers, this development is significant as it concerns the digital infrastructure linked to the ThaID platform, which is increasingly central to government services. While the project aims to integrate AI into national identification processes, the ongoing audit raises questions about the project's long-term stability and fiscal accountability. It remains to be confirmed how the OAG will respond to the request and whether the project's implementation will be paused or modified pending the outcome of the investigation.
