Thailand Targets Growth in Global Halal Economy

Thailand is positioning itself to capture a larger share of the global halal market, projected to reach $3.56 trillion by 2029.

According to Khaosod Online, Thailand is aiming to strengthen its presence in the global halal economy by leveraging its comprehensive supply chain. Pornpimon Mahamad, Director of the Halal Science Center at Chulalongkorn University, highlighted that the global halal market is expected to see consumer spending reach $3.56 trillion by 2029 across six key sectors: food, fashion, tourism, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and media.

Thailand possesses significant advantages, ranging from agricultural production to advanced scientific testing and verification systems. Experts suggest that the country’s potential lies in integrating these strengths—starting with scientific research, moving through innovation in raw materials and manufacturing, and finally connecting these products to global markets. For residents and travelers, this initiative may lead to a wider variety of certified halal products, improved quality standards in local goods, and a more robust tourism infrastructure catering to diverse needs.

While the government and academic institutions are focused on building a systematic framework to enhance product credibility, the specific policy measures or trade agreements required to fully realize this market share remain to be confirmed. The focus remains on creating a cohesive ecosystem that ensures Thai halal products remain competitive both domestically and internationally.
