Potential TV Blackout Risks for 8 Million Households Amid C-Band Transition
Thailand's National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) is addressing concerns over a potential service disruption for 8 million households as it prepares to reallocate C-Band satellite frequencies for 5G and 6G development.
According to a report by Prachachat Business, the Thailand Consumers Council has convened with the NBTC and the Digital TV Association to discuss the upcoming phase-out of C-Band satellite technology. This transition is part of a strategic roadmap for 2026–2030, which involves reallocating the 3700–4200 MHz frequency range to support advanced telecommunications infrastructure, specifically 5G and 6G networks.
There is significant concern that the decommissioning of traditional large mesh satellite dishes could lead to a 'blackout' for approximately 8 million households currently relying on this infrastructure for television access. To mitigate this, the Council is urging the NBTC and major mobile operators, AIS and True, to establish a dedicated working group focused on transition support and consumer compensation.

While the roadmap for the frequency shift is set for the 2026–2030 period, the specific timeline for service interruptions and the details of any potential compensation or technical assistance programs remain to be confirmed.
