Phuket Authorities Investigate Allegations of Extortion by Thalang District Volunteers
The Thai government has ordered an investigation into Territorial Defense Volunteers in Phuket following public complaints of extortion, leading to their immediate suspension.
On September 20, 2026, the Thai government announced an investigation into a group of Territorial Defense Volunteers (Or Sor) stationed at a checkpoint in Thalang District, Phuket. The probe follows public complaints circulating on social media alleging that these volunteers were extorting money from local residents.
Deputy Government Spokesperson Ploy-Talay Laksameesangchan stated that Deputy Minister of Interior Phonpee Suwanchawi has directed the Phuket Governor and the Thalang District Chief to clarify the facts. The government emphasized that if the allegations are proven true, the individuals involved will face strict legal consequences without exception. Officials noted that the primary duty of these volunteers is to assist in maintaining public order and safety, not to exploit citizens for personal gain.
In response to the incident, the Phuket Governor has ordered the accused volunteer unit to cease their duties immediately. A new team of approximately 30 personnel has been deployed to ensure that security operations in the area continue without interruption. Authorities are currently in the process of summoning relevant individuals to provide testimony.
