Thailand’s Data Center Expansion: Balancing Investment and National Resources
Thailand has approved 42 data center projects worth 750 billion baht, prompting the government to shift its focus toward maximizing local benefits.
According to a report by Khaosod Online, Thailand is rapidly emerging as a regional digital infrastructure hub. Data centers are transitioning from niche technology businesses to essential economic foundations, supporting cloud computing, artificial intelligence, digital finance, and smart manufacturing.
Data from the Board of Investment (BOI) indicates that between 2024 and 2026, 42 data center projects have been approved for investment incentives. These projects represent a combined IT load of 3,400 megawatts and a total investment value of 750 billion baht, with backing from investors in Thailand, China, the United States, the UAE, and Japan.
While this influx of capital highlights Thailand's growing appeal, it has also sparked a national conversation regarding the consumption of local resources. The government is reportedly shifting its strategy from simply attracting foreign investment to prioritizing projects that offer the greatest long-term benefits to the Thai economy and its citizens. As the sector expands, authorities are moving to organize and regulate the industry, with reports suggesting a potential pipeline of up to 166 projects. For residents and businesses, this growth signifies a more robust digital infrastructure, though the long-term impact on energy and resource management remains a subject of ongoing government evaluation.
